I love it when my friends come up with really cute things for me to crochet. It almost always leads to something special, and I’m happy to be able to share with you my latest custom crochet creation.
My dear friends had their first child back in December. She is the sweetest little girl, and there is no question she is much loved! When they asked me to try and crochet father-daughter Despicable Me minion hats, I couldn’t resist. And I think they turned out super cute.
If you are new to crocheting, or if you have never been brave enough to attempt making up your own pattern, this is an ideal project to begin with. Start out with your favorite basic hat pattern. I prefer to use a pattern that is based around the double crochet stitch because it allows the hat to stretch and shape itself as needed.
I added a little blue around the bottom both because the minions wear blue and because many people with fair skin look “washed out” in yellow. The blue balances that and puts a less harsh color near the person’s face.
For the eyes, you will need small amounts of black, brown, white, and gray/silver yarn. The strap of the goggles is a simple crochet chain, and then one row of single crochet along the original chain.
Make it large enough that you won’t have to stretch it much as you stitch it into place. Otherwise the top of the hat won’t stretch enough to fit the person wearing it. The hair styles and facial expressions you can make on these hats are nearly endless. Have fun with it!
I’m especially a fan of minion hats with lots of scraggly hair. The coy smile makes me pretty happy too.
If you decide to try and make your own minion hats, let me know! I’d love to see your creations!
